The Grand Strand Pickleball League just finished their first session and had an awards pizza party at the Myrtle Beach State Park on Sunday.  It was a little windy but all had a good time and played volleyball and corn hole.

The league was a nomad league playing in different locations across the Grand Strand.  This session had 7 groups of 8 players that played for 8 weeks. Each week players had different partners.

The playoff winners of each group were:

    Group A:  Quinn Meyer

    Group B:  George Ball

Group C:  Paul Robbins / Miriam Habibi (tie)

    Group D:  George Greenfield

    Group E:  Steve Taylor

    Group F:  Larry Tupis

    Group G: Kevin McCarthy

Thanks to Michele Boswell & Kristen Meyer for running this league.  They are putting some plans together for the next session.  The details should be coming out in a couple of weeks.

I am sad to inform all our pickleball friends that our pickleball Patriarch, Rena Grant, has passed away today at 5:10pm. Linda posted an update on facebook. Our prayers go out to all her family as they go through this trying times. It has been a touch year for Rena as she kept battling various set backs. I'm sure we'll get more information concerning arrangements in the coming days.

Terri and I still remember the day 4 years ago that Rena saw us looking in the gym through the glass to see what was going on.  She dragged us and told us it was PICKLEBALL!  We've been crazy about the game since.  Thanks Rena!

    We'll miss you.

Got a call yesterday from Nancy about the 2017 Myrtle Beach Seaside Classic Pickleball Tournament  The girls will be returning this year to run the tournament.  For those that are new, this is one of the biggest pickleball tournaments on the east coast.  Last year, there were more than 275 players from all over the country.

This will be played in Myrtle Beach's new Sports Center behind the convention center.  This year the dates are:

Thurs Sept 21 - Open Practice

    Fri - Sept 22 - Women's Doubles

    Sat - Sept 23 - Mixed Doubles

    Sun - Sept 24 - Men's Doubles

They will have cash prizes for Men's and Women's 5.0s.  No singles play this year.

The MB Pickleball Club supports this tournament and provides volunteers to run the tournament.  We will need 40-50 volunteers to run this smoothly.  We'll need folks to tape the courts (up to 25 courts), registration, stuff shirts, hydration stations, referees, scoreboard, setup and tear down.  We'll send out volunteer signup information at a later date.

We'll also begin to look for sponsor donations as we have in the past.  This can be cash donations, gift cards, discount certificates as well as items for the player bags.

For more information on the tournament and to register, please use the following link.  All registrations will be done online this year.

    Date:  Saturday March 11, 2017

    Time: 6:30pm - 9:30pm

    153 Wood Lake Drive

    Murrells Inlet, SC 29576

We want to thank one of our members, Doug Hunt, for securing his communities club house for our Spring Fling dance. This is a very nice venue with a large capacity and large dance floor. This year will have Karen & Carl playing and singing again.

This event will be BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle of whatever).  The club will provide some snacks, paper products, and coffee.

Being so close to St Patrick Day, some say this is our St. Patty’s Dance.  We’ll just say Green attire is optional.   While the club will provide some snacks, you are encouraged to bring snacks to be shared at your table.  Tables will be setup in mostly groups of 8 with the possibility of a couple of larger based upon the number of attendees.

We are asking that you sign up for this event via Doodle web site.  To sign up, please us the link below.  Members are welcome to bring a guest, but please keep this reasonable.  No groups of 4 or more please.  The club is funding this event.

Click HERE to indicate if you are attending or not.  Enter your name (if it’s not there) and click the appropriate box or boxes.

There are 25 folks signed up so far for the Pickleball Tournament.  Last year we had about 45 or so and I hope we will match that this year.  We do have about two months to go.  If you haven't signed up, consider it.  This is a local tournament that we run.  There will be Men's & Women's Doubles and Mixed Doubles.  This year they will be giving out t-shirts, gift bags and there will also be some raffle prizes at the pickleball tournament.

As stated in one my last notes, this will be played at the Midway Park on 19th Ave S in Myrtle Beach.  We will play on Thurs 4/20 & Fri 4/21.  There are other events happening Sat 4/22 at CCU.  Please see the registration form for details.

Because we will not be at CCU, we will not have the assistance of the students from CCU.  This means we will need volunteers to help run the tournament at Midway Park.  Because these are public courts, we will have to setup nets, tables, etc. and take them down each day. Things we'll need help with are:

    - Weds - Taping of 4 courts

    - Thurs/Fri - Net setup

    - Thurs/Fri - Registration & handing out gift bags/shirts

    - Thurs/Fri - Court Assignment

    - Thurs/Fri - Scoreboard

    - Thurs/Fri - Tear Down

If you are willing to help, please let me know.  Setup & teardown can be done by people playing but the other jobs are best done if you are not playing.
